1. What is Belly Dancing?

“Belly dance is exotic, feminine, self-expression and community”

The dance form we call "belly dancing" is derived from traditional women's dances of the Middle East. The Middle Eastern dance eventually evolved into belly dancing as entertainment ("Dans Oryantal " in Turkish and "Raqs Sharqi" in Arabic).Ladies who have learnt belly dance love the dance’s self-expression, beauty and feminine connection. Belly dancing is natural to a woman's bone and muscle structure with movements emanating from the torso rather than in the legs and feet.

The dance often focuses upon isolating different parts of the body, moving them independently in sensuous patterns, weaving together the entire feminine form. Belly dancing is generally performed barefoot, thought by many to stress the intimate physical connection between the dancer, her expression, and Mother Earth.

Belly dancing continues to grow in popularity in many parts of the world. Belly dance concerts, festivals and workshops are held throughout the world, attracting large audiences of women and men. Many belly dancers travel to the Middle East and Europe to study the art form. This trend has also caught on in Singapore and Asia, we are seeing more people learning and performing Belly dance as an art form.
